Hamburg (1.6 million inhabitants), upon the Elbe, at the confluence of the Alster, is Germany's main harbour.

The home of the Laeisz firm, Hamburg was the homeport of the Pamir, until she was sold to Erikson in 1931.

She then returned in 1951, as the homeport for her voyages to South America.
